Requirements to Become a Tutor
Let’s start with the most common question: no, you don’t need a teaching licence or an education degree. Here’s what you actually need.
The five mandatory criteria
Be a university student or hold a degree
That's the heart of the TutorAide profile: tutors who just came through the Quebec school system and know their subjects.
Be 18 or older
A firm eligibility condition, confirmed at application time.
Be authorized to work in Canada
Citizenship, permanent residence or a valid permit, including study permits that allow work.
Master the subjects you want to teach
You list your subjects and the highest level you can cover for each. Be honest: a great Secondary 2 tutor beats an average Secondary 5 one.
Accept a background check
Most of our students are minors. The check is mandatory, done after the interview, and we walk you through it.
Assets, not requirements
These strengthen an application without being dealbreakers:
- Tutoring, homework-help or teaching experience
- A car or access to public transit for in-home sessions
- Patience and a taste for explaining things differently than school does
- The ability to tutor in both French and English
A résumé is optional. The application form covers the essentials, and you can always email your résumé afterwards to round out your file.
